So far I have gathered what I want my materials will be and started making drafts for what may be considered my first piece to create. The project is also for my advance print class so I'm arranging it to be considered for the show.
Artists
Marina Abramovic: Abramovic is a performance artist who started her career in the 1970s. Her main theme is the study between the performer and audience as well as limitations of the body. I love her work because of the content and risks she sometimes puts herself into her work. Although her performances are a bit tame today, the ideas she puts in really helps to rethink certain topics and even yourself as a person.
Wayne Thiebaud: His work is very colorful and most of the time uses the rule of two or three in his art. I'm fascinated by his paintings because of the way he utilizes the desserts in his art. They might seem random but he formats them to have more meaning, like the color tones he uses. They can be of any color palette but he uses the common one you would think for the subjects, however they have a warm tone to them which has a relaxing vibe to his work.
Hannah Wilke: Most of Wilke's works include Feminist aspects, such as creating tiny sculptors of the vulva. She also photographed herself and other women in personal situations; some of her photos include herself in the final parts of her career as she documented herself battling lymphoma. What brings my attention to her work is not just how she brought attention to her art along with herself when featuring women during her time was controversial but of the materials she used. She made the vulva sculptures from using terra cotta to using everyday materials such as chewing gum. This aspect helps with the endless objects or ideas I can use with my work if I just look around closely and see what can be used metaphorically/ representational.
HR Giger: Giger was an artist who painted surrealist images as well as a set designer and sculptor. He is well known for creating the structure and prototype of the Alien films and franchise. What I love about his work is the amount of detail and darker elements he used with the futuristic, mechanical structure he thought of. I feel a lot of his work was made before it's time due to not seeing much like his made in the late 1970s-80s with the futuristic image and often erotic content.
